Landscape Design

Landscape Design is the artistic part of designing your new garden / outdoor area. It is similar to Landscape Architecture, which also encompasses the structural engineering concepts of landscaping.

The design phase takes into account the soils, drainage and climate of the area in order to help with the plants survival.

If you are considering hiring a landscaping designer, check that they are licensed to do the works required, ad some of the more structural designs require this. As a Landscape Design professional, they should be able to show proficiency in many areas such as; landscape management, landscape engineering, landscape planning, and garden design.

Some designer use a pencil and paper to draw their initial ideas, then they transfer it across to design software which allows a more accurate design that can be given to the landscapers to build.

Landscaping your garden should be fun and adventurous. Firstly idealise what you would like your garden to be like and what you want to use it for, then define your budget and stick to it. Then either hire a designer to come and bring that dream to life, or do it yourself and take the time to research the materials and plants and their costs before starting work.

Building retaining walls, or water features can add significant amounts to the project, as well as take more of your budget. Adding Decking, a Swimming Pool or Spa, and any sort of structure such as a Pergola or Veranda can make great entertaining areas, but may require planning approval as well as structural regulations.

Some people incorporate a BBQ area, and a quiet area for reading or lounging in the sun. Others design play areas for their children with climbing frames and tree houses.

Whatever your needs, look around for a qualified and experienced Landscape Designer to help develop your outdoor area to suit your needs, and to make it a fun and relaxing place to be. You may also require it to be low maintenance, which will require professional advice on plant types and watering systems such as sprinklers and irrigation. Adding Mulch or stones to improve the overall appearance of the garden beds is a great idea.
